Haiku Time on the air!

Haiku Time was mentioned today on the radio (listen here), during a segment about haiku on On Point with Tom Ashbrook, a show on WBUR. Haiku Time appears around 18:20. It led to some interesting discussion about the importance of intent in art, the artistic process, and the role of the poet in general. George Swede says:

Well, a lot of my poems arise unintentionally. I might be on the subway, walking in the street, and all of a sudden I have these words come in - I pull out my notebook, and write them down, and sometimes they work. And in many ways you could argue that the app that was just described maybe duplicates the artistic process within us.

I mean, you could argue that we're very much electro-biochemical based machines - that the neuronal networks that we establish for writing poetry, we plug into them and they start to generate words which eventually sometimes emerge into good poems, and usually not very good poems.

Swede is a poet, haiku expert, and editor of Frogpond, the journal of the Haiku Society of America, as On Point describes him on their site. He also says that Haiku Time might be a good way to get started if you're trying to write haiku. This is the widest recognition Haiku Time has received since it was featured on The Haiku Foundation's blog, which also led to some lively discussion.

Haiku Time is available in the app store for $0.99, and also has a free version, Haiku Time Basic. This is the example haiku that was given on air:

Full moon on the path

It's completely redone, with a smooth interface that lets you edit lines by hand, undo what you don't like, and save your haiku to see or change whenever you want. Four beautiful backgrounds take advantage of the iPhone 4's Retina display.

Symmetry Lab 3.7 is in the app store! It has a massively improved interface with a new options menu, along with fully scalable brush size, plus the all-new snap-to-grid feature. With both hex and square options, drawing patterns on the grid enables beautiful precision and additional order when you need it.

Symmetry Lab 3.0 has hit the shelves of the app store! You can now draw with twelve new types of symmetry, including three-, five-, and seven-fold rotational, along with high-number symmetry all the way up to 48-fold. You can also use the four drawing styles, normal, jagged, right angles, and dots while drawing normally as well as in the pattern generator. You can make some really amazing patterns. Get it here.

Haiku Time!

Haiku Time is available! It's arguably the simplest or the most complex of my apps - press a button and get a haiku. It uses a context-free grammar generation algorithm to yield tens of millions of possibilities, but always makes grammatical sense. I designed its vocabulary to produce only tranquil, natural images. It's an interesting exercise in interpretation to try to extract "meaning" from something essentially random. Can art exist without intent?

Symmetry Lab 2.0

Symmetry Lab 2.0 is here! You can now change brush size, change the drawing style for the generator, save your patterns, and draw with five new colors: random, yarn, rainbow, fire, and ice. This is an exciting upgrade for Symmetry Lab. If you already have the full version of Symmetry Lab, the update is free, and if you don't, it's still only a dollar, and is now a major change from Basic.

One slight technical glitch is that it takes a pretty powerful shake to erase. If you're weak-armed or don't want to look crazy in public spaces, I recommend exiting the app and then returning to erase.

Keep an eye out for 3.0, which introduces new symmetry styles including 3, 5, and 7-way rotational, and all the way up to 48-fold. (And it will correct the shake glitch, of course.)

Symmetry Lab and dCode

Hey all! My first apps are available - both full and basic versions of Symmetry Lab and dCode. Here's a little more info about each that the official description lacks:

Symmetry Lab is not designed to be a powerful drawing environment - it's just a simple, fun way to pass some time, either by drawing your own faces, flowers, or crazy patterns, or by letting the autonomous generator create its own patterns. Also, I realize the difference between basic and full is not extreme - just two types of symmetry and the autonomous generator. Still, if you love basic, I'd encourage you to try the full version! It can do some pretty cool stuff. (Here's an insider's tip: try letting the generator run for a long time, especially with a color like blue. White patterns develop at the intersections, creating an "ice" effect like you can see in one of the screenshots.)

dCode is at the opposite end of the spectrum - it's a very challenging puzzle game for left-brained individuals. The first few levels are exceedingly easy, designed to get you acquainted with the three encoding mechanisms. After that, it's up to you to experiment and try to deduce what's going on. For example, you can hone in on the answer if you see a word pop out at you by slowly moving the shift and tilt in opposite directions. This will keep the word you've found alive while getting the rest of the message toward the goal. My advice is to use the red hint button sparingly and let messing around with sliders do the trick.

Anyway, if you like basic, try the full versions! If you like the full versions, tell a friend! I don't have a huge amount of distribution power so word of mouth can go a long way. I'm just one guy, not a huge software company - and obviously these are pretty simple apps - but they're meant to be fun, and I hope you enjoy them.
